Novato schools to get solar panel systems for estimated $7M in savings
By Janis Mara, Marin Independent Journal
Ten Novato schools will use solar to power their buildings next year.
San Mateo-based Solar City will install solar panels at the schools beginning in June. The system, which will be operational in January, is projected to save the district more than $7 million over 25 years, with savings of $160,000 in the 2016-17 school year.
Without solar, the estimated cost of power over 25 years is $17.9 million; with solar power over the same 25 years, the estimated cost is $10.6 million.
The district negotiated a power purchase agreement with Solar City, agreeing to buy energy from the company for the next 20 years. In exchange, Solar City absorbed the costs of installation.
“We don’t pay for it. Solar City is the investor,” Maloney said. “They are using their dollars. Solar City constructs and installs the solar panels and structures at their cost and sells the energy to the district at 14.79 cents a kilowatt, which is a reduction from an average of 20 cents a kilowatt, PG&E’s rate.” See the full Story in the Marin IJ HERE
